hair for oil spills

03 Apr

found this website on FB.

this is the first time i hear that hair can absorb oil spills..

so, all the loose hair that is donated by the many participating salons, they are all stuffed into nylon stockings and can be placed around oil spills. which prevents oil spills from getting spread out more, as well as soak up the oil.. the hair is also used to make hair mats which are used to saving wildlife that were soaked in oil spills. like putting the wildlife on the hair mat which helps in the draining of the oil coat.

here’s a pic of prisoners from philippines getting their hair shaved.

so how does hair absorb oil? scientists say that its actually more of a coating process. where oil penetrates into the grooves and cracks and pores.

interesting eh…. i would mind giving my hair clippings. i hope more salons will take this up, because oil spills are really terrible for wildlife…

currently, if the venue of oil spill is reached within an hour, they use containment and boats which suck up the oil from the surface.

they may use sorbents, which are like sponges which absorb the oil ont he surface of the water.

or they may purposely set the oil on fire, so that the oil burns out. that of course will cause ALOT of pollution and its just really something not good.

oil spills can also be disintegrated by

1) dispersants: chemicals which break down the oil slick

2) biological agents: like phosphorus and nitrogen which promote growth of microorganisms which break down oil slick naturally.

so, now with another natural method, hopefully oil spills can be contained quickly with little damage to wildlife…
