John C Maxwell (chapter 1)

21 Apr

Relationships 101

this book talks abt leadership styles and how relationships are important to successful leadership… was given to me by CH i think sometime last week or last last week… time to read a little today, and its really nice..

he sites an example abt President Reagan.

“in 1975, Reagan gave a speech to a group of conservation-minded hunters in San Francisco and the organisation gave his a small bronze lion as a gift. At that time, Deaver admired it and told Governer Reagan how beautiful he thought it was.

ten years later, Deaver prepared to bring his service to President Reagan to an end after having written his letter of resignation. Reagan asked Deaver to come to the Oval Office the next morning. As the deputy chief of staff entered the room, the president stood in front of his desk to greet him.

“Mike,” he said, “all night i’ve been trying to think of something to give you that would be a reminder of all the great times we had together.” Then Reagan turned around and picked up something from his desk. “You kinda liked this little thing, as i recall, ” the president said, his eyes moist. And he handed the bronze lion to Deaver, who was totally overcome.

He couldnt believe that Reagan had remembered that about him all those years. That lion has held a place of honor in Deaver’s home ever since. “

above everything else, i guess sincerity is the most important thing in relationships.

Maxwell goes on to how to see whether one has built solid relationships with others.

1. Respect

“You cant make the other fellow feel important in your presence if you secretly feel that he is a nobody”

2. Shared experiences

Going through the learning process together and realising what works and how best to do it.

3. Trust

“to be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved”

4. Reciprocity

there has to be give-and-take so that everyone benefits.

“When it comes to relationships, everything begins with respect, with the desire to place value on other people.”

5. Mutual enjoyment

“Few things will pay you bigger dividends than the time and trouble you take to understand people. … Nothing will give you greater satisfaction or bring you more happiness.”

doesnt this make you reflect. few ppl place importance in having good relationships with others. acquaintainces and friends… yea, but building solid relationships with others is not as easy as many percieve. im guilty of this too. because these 5 things mentioned takes effort to make it work. your actions will need to show that you mean it. and you have to genuinely believe in these before you accept these attributes. otherwise, the hypocracy will be revealed too…

Chapter 2: “People dont care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”
